The NCNE and Center for Nonprofit Excellence Business Planning Project

NCNE is leading a national project designed to develop new ways of thinking about planning in nonprofits.  We are doing this in partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Excellence in Akron, Ohio which has received a grant from the Kellogg Foundation for this purpose.  NCNE has supplemented this with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation.

The Center for Nonprofit Excellence is a management support organization whose mission is to help nonprofit organizations achieve their missions through effective management.

The aim of the project is to develop what we are calling "protocols" - ways of thinking about planning the work of your nonprofit, for the whole organization, a particular program, or a commercial venture.

This work is being guided by an Advisory Group of people pre-eminent in nonprofit thinking and practice in the US - the members of this Group are given below.

The work has so far generated a set of simply worded questions and some ways of answering these. The resulting framework and guide are being piloted now with a small number of nonprofits in Akron, Ohio under the auspices of CNE. The results of the pilot will be published on this page of the site. In the meantime, we have included in this section of the Base a compendium of tools and approaches that can be used in planning by nonprofits.
